The brooch is in the shape of a St Brigid's Cross. It has Connemara marble set into the cross arms.
This cross variant is often woven from straw or rushes and is named for the Christian Saint Brigid of Kildare and is also attributed to the Pagan goddess Brigid. Brigid's cross is typically woven on 1 February, her feast day, as well as the festival of Imbolc in pre-Christian Ireland.
