The box is a rectangular shape with a hand painted miniature fairy tale scene of a maiden. The scene has a male and female character in a outdoor winter village scene. The male figure is extending his hand to the maiden. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting. Artists began making papier-mâché decorative boxes that were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales. The box comes with some original paperwork one is a leaflet: The story of the Russian Lacquer Miniature painting and one is information on the box itself (I believe).
Measurements: approximately 5 1/2 inches long, 3 13/16 inches wide and 1 6/8 inches high
Weight: 7 7/8 ounces
Markings: hand painted at lower center of scene-METE ЛПЦА?. On bottom in gold lettering it reads: Made in USSR BD-177.
Condition: In overall great condition for age and material. The box has some small blemishes from use/storage. The box hinge is in working order. The finish on the box is not completely smooth there is texture to it-see pictures.
This is a lovely box that can be used for storing jewelry or any other treasures you may have.
